PATTERNS AND DISPLAYS:
Zebra

Zebra can be used in a variety of agonistic contexts. It can be displayed by females when repulsing males or by males when competing for status or guarding a female.

This display is based mainly on strong black and white contrast. It consists of a variety of components - zebra on arms, mantle and fins, fin base line and angle of spread of the accompanying arm posture. The message is more intense when more components are shown. Additionally, a lighter background color also means more intensity. At the highest intensity two males engage in a formal zebra contest.

Usually the male in the lower position wins the contest by showing intese zebra on its doral surface and spreading its arms to full angle. The male in the upper position shows zebra dots on its ventral surface.

In the model all background colors can be changed immediately and only certain zebra components can be grouped together to show those intensity gradations.
