PATTERNS AND DISPLAYS:
Saddle (Pied)

This display is an indication of sexual interest by an adult female and may be answered by a male stripe display in a courtship sequence.

Saddle is shown on a white background with pale fins. At full display a 1 cm brown bar circles the anterior edge of the mantle, extending as a central stripe about 1/3 posterior at the dorsal midline.

It varies in intensity regarding color and area of background. At a high intensity the saddle is displayed on a bright white background, while at low intensity the saddle can be observed on a brown background. At minimum it can be a white saddle spot on the posterior-lateral tip of the mantle.
Saddle can be a directional signal displayed unilaterally towards an interested male.
