PATTERNS AND DISPLAYS:
Lateral Silver

Lateral silver is an antagonistic display of adult males, found while one male is consort guarding a female. It is a display in which the two sides of the body are patterned differently. One side of the squid (towards a rival) is pale with the outer half of the fin colored in brown; the other side (towards the consort) is basic brown and the outer half of this fin is pale. Lateral silver can also have bilateral blue-green eyebrows, a gold headbar, a strong reflective mid-dorsal line and fin- and mantle-dots.
